Yachats Smelt Fry











Robert and I love smelt, so when I read that Yachats was having its annual Smelt Fry, we put it into our full schedule on Saturday. We both had seconds. Some people eat them bones and all, but we prefer taking the bones out, which is very easy. I did eat one in its entirety (they are cleaned). Then, I had blackberry pie for dessert.
I remember watching my dad catch smelt at Yachats using a big net that was attached to his waist. He would scoop them into the net when they came in with a wave. They would then go into a apron type container around his waist, not unlike a marsupial.
