I Went Shad Fishing For the First Time

Steve and Grete Ebert, my brother and sister-in-law, invited me to go Shad fishing on the Columbia River not far from their home on the Washougal River in Washington. We first went to the Food Mart, where I got a fishing license, good for the entire season.
I landed the first fish of the day and three different kinds of fish! Shad put up quite a fight and feel like a bigger fish when on line because of how they fight and swim and because of the Columbia river's current.

My Shad!

Grete caught the second Shad.

This this the only trout caught (and I landed it!). It went right back in (too little).

This is the small, small mouth bass I caught. Steve returned it to the Columbia

Steve had a weird, but effective system for his anchor using a clever float devise.

The Tall Ships I saw during Fleet
Week at the Rose Festival, were docked in Washougal for a few days. Steve drove his boat near them so Grete and I could take pictures.

When we got the boat out of the Columbia, down the ramp walked an officer to check to see if we had fishing licenses. I was thrilled to show Murray Schlenker, Fish and Wildlife Captain W-15, Enforcement Program, my new license.
