Russian Bishop's House

The Bishop's House was completed in 1842 and was the center of Russian Orthodox church authority in a diocese that stretched from California to Siberian Kamchatka.

The Bishop would see important visiting dignitaries in his living area where he would serve tea as he sat at the long couch, while guests had the smaller chairs. Notice the samovar. Eventually even the Natives would drink tea in their own homes.

The Bishop has his own private area and alter upstairs where he would pray.
