We arrived in Oahu Dec. 5, staying at the Ko Olina Beach Club Resort. It was an auction win.

The first night we ate at Roy's, which served some of the best food we have ever had.
We split a Caesar salad that had the best dressing. I will try to copy it.

Thanksgiving at the Beach

We had Thanksgiving dinner at the beach and had the three guys next door come over to share our food.

Lee Ann took some time off of school work so she could join us. She requested that I make the familyl carrot casserole.

Dat made this turkey cake. Can you believe it!? He works a few hours a week at Williams- Sonoma so he can buy all kinds of things. We actually had pie for dinner and ate the turkey cake later....

Kyllos at Lincoln City

My mother and I headed over to the beach on Tuesday, stopping at Inn at Spanish Head for drinks. I guess I didn't take any pictures. We enjoyed the view of the ocean, our food and great waitress. She made me a great pear martini and mother had the grey coast martini. Here we are having lunch at Kyllos Wednesday, I think. Everyone else was getting ready for Thanksgiving. I had already done a great deal of preparation.

Mother had the oysters.

I had the fish tacos.

Every Ten Years I Bowl; Can't Help It

We returned to Grand Central Bowl at their official opening time. The place was full of people getting ready for a private event in the evening. We had to move lanes a few times and ignore workmen. We were the only people bowling, however.
Julie Skinner liked the dog picture. Artwork was shown on the large screen above our pins. If anyone sees a piece they like they can look the artist up in a book and contact them about purchasing it.

We got some free beers because we had to put up with people setting up for a big event that evening. They were having a fashion show fundraiser there. I grumbled to a woman nearby that we should at least get food or free beers. She said she worked for Henry Weinhart and would get us whatever we wanted. She was helping coordinate the set-up apparently. I ordered my favorite - Hefeweizen and Julie had an Amber Ale, I think. They do have a nice restaurant in front and it was busy. We had planned on having lunch there, but since we ate at the Grand Jette nearby, we were full.

Notice that we had changing artwork on the screen in front of us. We could have had any TV channel we wished. So, if you bowl when your favorite team is playing, you can do both.

Okay, we weren't so hot. I got a big 58. Julie Skinner got the 100. Do you think all my gutter balls had something to do with my score??
Julie wanted to crack 100, but she did reach 100. So, we toasted her win!

From Bowling to Ballet

I had read about Grand Central Bowl awhile back and learned that they had updated the place with electronic artwork, for one thing. So I selected it for my Exploring Portland group to go to. Julie Skinner was the only one to attend with me.
I turned out that their website said the place opens at 11 a.m., but in truth it opens at 11:30 a.m., so we went walking to find a place for coffee.
We found the Grand Jete Cafe, 510 SE Morrison. Inside was a decor to follow the name - ballet figurines, wall hangings and a lovely wall painting of a dancer in mid flight of a grand jete. I then studied the bodies of the customers and saw that most looked like ballet dancers. I chatted with the barista and learned that the Oregon Ballet Theatre was a few blocks away. It all made sense then!!

I had the berry scone. It was good, but not as good as Julie's choice.

Julie ordered the almond croissant. I had eaten one recently, so didn't get one, but should have. It was twice the size of the one I got from, Nuvrei, the bakery that makes them!! I think maybe they sell their 'runts' at their shop and their commercial clients get the good ones....
Julie Skinner and I located the Oregon Ballet Theatre a block away from the coffee shop. We walked in and spoke with the receptionist and ogled the dancers who were nearby.

This statue is in the area just outside of the rehearsal halls. Dancers were on their breaks and sitting around the space. They were rehearsing for The Nutcracker. I decided not to take their picture out of courtesy, although it would have made a great shot to see them around this art piece.

Encore Opens to the Public

I toured the Encore at its Grand Opening awhile back. The tenth floor was open for people to look at floor plans. Three condo units were decorated. It was catered!! Since it was next door, I went and checked it out. Most units have great views - the park, the river or the Fremont Bridge.

Dinner with Dale and Mary at 50 Plates

Dale and Mary Davis came up from Salem to see our condo and took us out to dinner . I selected 50 Plates, which is the new restaurant in our neighborhood. There is a sampling of small plates or larger entrees from various USA regions, not all fifty states. In the entry way is a map of the United States made of license plates....

Each couple shared a salad.

Mary and Robert both ordered the Carpetbagger Stack - pan-friend oysters, filet medallions, warm "steak sauce".

I don't remember what Dale had, but it looks good.

I loved my Shrimp & Grits - creole ragout with tasso and tomato.

I don't know why we can't control this , but we always manage to take a look see at the dessert menu when we eat out. Of course, then we order. Robert ordered the S'more Fondu - house made grahams, molten marshmallow, Vahirona hot fudge. I ate just as much as he did. He needed my help.

Judge Learned Hand Award Luncheon

The Benson Lobby is welcoming on a rainy day. Upstairs was the luncheon in a ballroom.

I attended the 2008 Judge Learned Hand Award Luncheon, a program of the Oregon Area Jewish Committee at the Benson Hotel, November 5.

Brian Booth, attorney, was given well deserved recognition for all his good works and mentoring. He is a funny and inspiring man.
Attorney General-Elect John Kroger gave the Keynote address.

Allan Abravanel presented the Judge Learned Hand Award to Brain Booth.

Blue Sky Sunday for Church

Madison was a great help in opening gifts. She loves her brother and 99% of the time acts kindly toward him.

Dinner Sunday night was some spaghetti Scott made with artichoke hearts. We returned to Portland Monday morning.

We Celebrated Scott's Birthday with Friends

Saturday, Grandpa and Max watched football while the rest of us prepared for the party that night when two couples came over to help Scott celebrate his birthday.

I recognized the Cowboy Caviar because I have a recipe for it myself. I shared it with . Clint's had black beans instead of blackeyed peas. Mine had cilantro and avocado and no green pepper. But they both are Cowboy Caviar.

Journey to Jerome

Scott drove us all to Jerome along a twisting road up to the high elevation of a former successful area of copper mines. At one point they were generating one million dollars a month! It was THE place to be. The town had 150 prostitutes, huge hotels and even an opera house.

The Rose Restaurant

We arrived in Prescott on November 14th - Scott's birthday. That evening, he opened a few gifts and then off we went to the best place in town for such events - The Rose Restaurant. The children stayed home with some friends who brought their son, Luke, along.

Scott had a gibson.

Rose Martini - made with vodka and rose nectar and I think, lemon juice. Very, very mild. Shana and I had those.

Veal Teresa - Sauteed Veal Scallopini in White Wine and Lemon, topped with Lobster, Artichoke Hearts and Bearnaise Sauce, with Potato du Jour. Shana picked this winner.

Scott had the special: fillet Mignon and lobster with Bearnaise sauce.

Trip to Prescott to See the Kids Friday

Robert walked with Madison and Max over the the golf club in front of their home for our lunch. Isn't that handy?
Max patiently awaited his meal. He is a cutie who definitely has red hair. My mother likes that. She wanted me to marry a redhead or have red haired kids.

The kids had fun playing in front of the house "painting" Madison's trike and the driveway with water, also blowing bubbles. The weather was warm in the sunshine. Evenings were cool.
Robert and Scott played 18 holes of golf after lunch. Afterward, they drove their cart over to the house to take their clubs out before returning it across the street.

Prescott, Here We Come!

Appreciate all my entries of late, because we are leaving way too early in the morning tomorrow to catch a flight to Phoenix and then a flight to Prescott. Only three flights a day fly there. Two early ones and one late one. Next time we will probably take the van shuttle from Phoenix or fly in at 10:30 pm. We thought that was too late, but since our son and his family only live 4 minutes from the airport, it would have been OK.

Bella Beach Party in Portland

Robert and I invited all the people who have or had places at Bella Beach and live in Portland to come over to visit and eat. Sixteen people arrived. It was a potluck with plenty for everyone. Lots of catching up, but I didn't have a chance to talk with everyone. I am hoping some in the group continues what we started.

Fun Decor in Aloha

I drive to Aloha for now to get my nails done. This is a new concept for me. The trip is too long, but she used a great gel product that keeps my nails in tact. I love how she decorated her house. She has a great flare and not afraid to use it. Her color theme is mainly teal and pink. I took pictures of her kitchen, family room and guest/son's bathroom. I didn't photograph her living room, so may do that another trip.

These shoes are on the ceiling of the guest bathroom. They are the shoes Christine and her husband wore for their wedding. I loved it.

Her sweetie-pie son's room is full of the Golden Books. His name is Cooper.

Friends and Football Game

In a room at the CH2M-Hill Alumni Center at Oregon State I found old friend Dick Bakken who now lives in Seattle. I knew him from when I worked with CSD in Salem. Richard Bakken was the CSD director then. His lovely wife, Karen, doesn't think his reunions are much, but then she didn't know I would be there!
The men's choir was impressive as they sang many acappella songs for us.

Ann and Robert Grim from Salem.The stadium was full. Everyone had a great time and we all stayed until the very end of the game because it was nip and tuck. OSU beat Arizona.

The huge screen made watching replays easy.

Halloween Weekend with David and Benny

Oct. 31, we saw David Sedaris at the Schnitz where he read from works in progress and two New Yorker articles. This was our third time seeing him. Turns out he has been to Portland about ten times. He stays at the Heathman
November 1, we went to Corvallis for a Homecoming/Reunion Party and the OSU v Arizona game. The leaves were beautiful. The weather an little iffy, but it only rained about 20 minutes during the game. We saw some old friends. Pictures to follow tomorrow.

I love a parade. This one hadn't been done for a long time but they started it up again. Not too many floats, but I still get a kick out of seeing them.

We were given Benny Beaver for President buttons to wear. I think that was the theme for Homecoming.

Where Robert and I had speech classes. In the foyer of this building I asked him out on a date. The rest is history.

Where's Molly?

October 30th, Robert and I joined others for Albertina Kerr Centers 101st Board of Directors Annual Meeting and Community Awards at the Governor Hotel Ballroom. My Master's Degree is in Special Education, so you can believe that I appreciated hearing about the selected people they were honoring. Each received large, attractive ceramic plates that were made by clients.

Keynote speaker was Jeff Daly who at age 6 asked his parents, "Where's Molly?" referring to his younger sister who disappeared from his young life when Molly was just shy of 3 years old. His parents refused to talk about her and 47 years later Jeff finally learned the family secret. Molly had been sent to Fairview Training Center because her doctor thought that was the best place for her since she was retarded. Jeff, a director and fim maker, filmed his odyssey of learning the truth.
I had meant to see the film when it was shown during Portland Film Festival a few years ago and also while at The Living Room Theater. I never did. You can't find it at Netflix or video rental stores for some reason. But this day I purchased two copies. Let me know if you want to borrow one. You might even want to buy a copy. Incidentally, Molly was there for a short while at the event.

We made our way into The Nines enjoying the decor and view then headed into the ballroom where food and drink were available for all invited for the tour.

Many of the chefs at The Nines were out in the ballroom floor setting up their goodies. Here is a filling for a phyllo dough cup with added ice cream. We checked out the desserts, but ate the savory appetizers first.

We Toured The Nines, a Luxury Hotel in Town

Robert and I were invited to a special opening at The Nines, the new luxury hotel in the former Meier & Frank building, now Macy's. I will put up many different themed entries into my blog to show you all the pictures I took.

Stick 'Em Up

October 22, Mary Shaw and I went through the Portland Police Museum inside the Justice Center on SW 2nd Ave. We saw law enforcement exhibits with artifacts from the 1800's to the present.

I desperately needed by police hat. In the afternoon I got my hair done! Cops probably don't wear candy corn ear rings. Not regulation, I bet.

You can tell Mary likes the idea of this for her next vocation. Working in a middle school has many similarities....

Police work is tiring and makes you hungry, so we walked to Veritable Quandary. I had the borscht and Mary had the salad with figs, apple and goat cheese. I am going to give up on my quest for borscht as good as the soup I had in Sitka, AK. I ain't happening.... I couldn't even find a beet in this one, plus it had too much vinegar. I am now forced to make it myself.

Anchor Motel and Inn in Lincoln City

We stopped by a few weeks ago to check out The Anchor Motel and Inn at Lincoln City. It has been lovingly refurbished and looks great. The units have new beds but still have the old decor, which we enjoy. The large common area with lots of chairs, fireplace, TV, and small restaurant made you want to sit down and just stay there all day.

Dogs aren't welcome into the main lodge-like area. Apparently there is some history about that issue, but they can stay in individual units.

We got into one unit with its 'dog theme' .

Lunch at the Coast

I took Robert to Tiki's at 51st. It is in Taft, south of Lincoln City, before you get to Moe's, which is over rated. So, just stop at Tiki's. On a sunny day you sit outside and enjoy life.

Mojitos. They claim they are the best. Well, they rank right up with mine, so I agree.

Book Group was at Barbara's house. This time I got directions, so instead of taking an hour, I got there in about 14 minutes. Knowledge is power.
Her home is full of impressive artwork. This time I took few pictures of what she has on her walls and shelves since I have done that previously. BUT this time, she had a new man in her life who looked surprising like Don Quixote, at least the Don Quixote I know.
I have no information about him, so will get some to put here. Don't you love him? I have more pictures further on....

Cornbread. Those who wondered what type of Chinese food we would be eating were not disappointed to have a perfect fall meal.

We ended the seasonal meal with a perfect apple crisp by the groups famous dessert maker, Doris Green.

We all were quiet and listened to Doris share her information about Nicole Mones, author of The Last Chinese Chef. I liked learning how she started writing for Ruth Reichl's Gourmet magazine after Ruth read some of her travel articles about China. I think I heard that correctly. Many years ago I led a discussion on two of Reichl's books AND served food from her books. This was before we hosted in pairs. Too much work.

October Bunco at Janet's

Louie squawks and alerts Janet when anyone approached her front door, so no need to ring the doorbell!! He is in the parlour, Janet's cute room to the left of the entry. No pictures of it this time. Sorry.
The six of us who could make it (Wendy, Deanna, Janet, Pam, Dori, me) started out in the living room with appetizers and conversation.

Janet has great furniture and decorations in her home. She gets 'finds' as she travels about and when going on buying trips for her store, Ma Valise in Salem.
Poor Pam, had surgery on both thumbs within a few weeks of each other. She has a good attitude about it, however. She gets by with a little help from her friends (and husband, Tom).

Janet's table is always great to behold.

She has lots of fascinating collections and has a gift for displaying anything, really.

I Was a Taste Tester

Can you believe this - I was PAID to eat food!! Read on. You can, too.

I had an opportunity to be a food tester for the Sensory and Consumer Testing department in the Food Innovation Center (a joint project between the Oregon Department of Agriculture and Oregon State University) nearby at 1207 NW Naito Parkway. I signed up and had filled out questionnaires on line and this time was called in as a substitute, having been on the accepted list but not initially selected. It was exciting to be a part of it and in addition I was PAID $25.

The group of us went into individual cubicles where we each had a computer to use, a sink, paper towels, a picture of pear varieties and a little door like the kind when you give a UA at a doctor's office, but here they give you food pieces to taste.

I was given pear slices, one at a time and asked questions regarding their sweetness, juiciness, etc. and later how much I would pay for such a pear.
After I was through, I was given a quick peek for "behind the scenes" to see the technicians as they were lining up the pears for the next group of taster/testers.
The Food Innovation Center deals with: food product development, packaging and processing engineering, storage and shelf-life evaluation, sensory and consumer testing, market planning, business development and local, national, international market access and development

Get 'em Up; Move 'em Out

We took the Blue El train back to O'Hare airport and flew back to Portland on Tuesday, Oct. 14th. I got the free "Raiders of the Lost Ark" hat while walking along the Magnificent Mile. It fit Robert perfectly.

Carnivores Eat Out in Chicago

Harry Caray was a long time radio and tv baseball announcer who had a lot of influence and many rumors about his behavior. There are now three restaurants bearing his name in Illinois, one in Chicago.
After the Monday night cocktail party in the hotel we walked across the street to Harry Caray's a well known Italian steakhouse. I was the only non-lawyer at the table. The rest were all attorneys for automobile dealerships.

I am used to a dessert tray, but not a meat tray!! That's a lobster in the center. The cuts were all wrapped in plastic. I should have paid better attention because I don't know cuts of meat. Learning them is a longer term goal of mine.
Our friendly waiter explained every cut of meat that was available to order.

Robert picked a salad to start our his meal.

I don't know what possessed me, but I ordered a pasta dish at a place where nearly everyone has MEAT! I think it was that the ravioli was filled with artichokes, but it was hard to tell....

The baseball is filled with chocolate mousse. The "grass" is dyed coconut flakes. This was the best dessert of the group.

Wright's Unity Temple for the Unitarian Universalist Church

Frank Lloyd Wright began the design for this structure that" functions as a church, a performance space and an artistic catalyst" in 1905.

This is a solid cement building, unimposing from the street, but so special once inside.

From a flyer we got when touring the Unity Temple:
Charged with providing a new Unitarian Universalist Church to replace one lost to fire, Wright was constrained by a small budget, a narrow site on a busy street, and the need for a building to serve a variety of functions. Wright's desire to create a house of worship expressing the powerful simplicity of ancient temples prompted his request that it, too , be named a temple rather than a church.

Frank Lloyd Wright's Home and Studio Visit

We were told by friends, and knew by looking at tour books, that a trip to Oak Park where Frank Lloyd Wright created the Prairie School of Architecture was in order. In the town are the largest collection of Wright designed buildings and homes. We saw many of them. Wright lived there between 1889 and 1909. It turns out he wasn't the only famous American from that quaint town.... We took the El green train on Monday, Columbus Day, and got off at a place we thought we would love to live. It was fun walking to the Wright home and studio past the town, attractive huge homes, and large trees with their leaves blowing down on us.

Along the way we ended up walking with Sarah Kim from Toronto, who was on a vacation by herself after being part of the organizing group of the Toronto Film Festival.

We marveled at this huge tree as it leaned over the sidewalk showing off its red leaves.

The birthplace of Hemingway wasn't open until 1 pm, so we didn't have a chance to go into it or into the museum across the street. Once we were through touring the neighborhood viewing the architecture and having a guided tour of the Wright home, we had to hurry back to Chicago.

Here is the symbol Frank Lloyd Wright designed as his personal stamp.

This is the entrance to his studio where his team worked. The other side of the home was for his large family. We enjoyed the tour inside. I was not allowed to take any pictures, however.

I will have pictures of many of Wright designed homes and others in the neighborhood on a future blog entry. If you ever go to Chicago, I recommend the same side trip. The train ride was only $2 each way a person!

Russian Tea Time for Dinner

We had dinner at Russian Tea Time 1/2 a block from the Chicago Art Institute.
Robert figured that in a Russian Restaurant he ought to try their infused vodka. He liked the Jewel Bilberry best.

My Aunt Midge always likes a vodka martini with a twist, so that is what I ordered.

Borscht. I seem to order it when I can, just to see how they make it. This one had lots of beets (unlike the one I had at Veritible Quandry) and no meat.

Millenium Park in the Heart of Chicago

Chicago makes you so aware of architecture and design. On our last visit we took a trip on the river around the city looking at the many varieties of building designs.

It is fun to take pictures into the Cloud Gate sculpture.

Oh What A Night! (okay, Matinee)!

Saturday night, Robert saw a marquee for Jersey Boys, a musical revue about the Four Seasons. I had seen a performance by the Broadway group a few years ago during the Tony Awards and knew I wanted to see it. Here are songs they sing as seen in the 2007 Emmy Awards. One of the fellows you see there (Michael Ingersoll) was in the Chicago cast. When I was in New York this year I couldn't even get tickets for it. But this trip to Chicago was different. We went to the ticket office and got two fabulous tickets for the Sunday matinee. Cory Grant had the part for Frankie Valli and he was outstanding. He just got on board last month. He had been the understudy in New York, I think.

We also saw that Kathy Griffin was performing while we were in town, but we didn't follow up on getting tickets. We were busy.After the museum tour and before Jersey Boys, we stopped by a little place nearby, Argo Tea Cafe, and got a light lunch. I had the quiche, Robert the pizza.

The songs just kept coming! I need to get the CD. Here were some of the songs we heard: Oh What a Night, Silhouettes, Earth Angel, Sherry, Big Girls Don't Cry, Walk Like a Man, My Boyfriend's Back, Let's Hang On (To What we've Got), Rag Doll, Working My Way Back to You.

The Art Institute of Chicago

We had breakfast in front of The Art Institute of Chicago on a glorious Sunday. It might have been too hot for the marathon runners, but it was great for us. We spent the morning looking at art work, many famous ones which I took pictures of for you to enjoy.

Dinner in Chicago's Greek Town

Our first day in Chicago, we walked into the Sears Tower and learned the line for the trip to the top was around the corner, but while there I asked for a suggestion of a place to eat. The fellow at the desk suggested a restaurant in Greektown six or so blocks away. We didn't like the look of thelong line to get into the building for the view from the top so we kept going to Greektown. It covers several blocks and at one end has a small sample of Greek architecture for a welcoming symbol.

We found Costas' at the corner of Van Buren and Halsted.

Robert ordered their Satyrion Combination Plate - pastichio - macaroni & meat sauce covered with bechamel sauce, Moussakas, spinach cheese pie, dolmades, gyros platter. What a lot of good food.

After we shared a bread pudding (I ate before thinking about taking a picture) we walked into the cafe/pastry shops nearby. Too bad we were full. What gorgeous choices.

Arrived in Chicago Saturday Afternoon

We flew to Chicago Saturday morning arriving around 2:30 pm. We had been there once before for the same meeting of the National Association of Dealer Counsel (attorneys for auto dealerships). We went early so we could do some "Chicago" things. I learned later why we couldn't get a room in the hotel of the conference prior to Monday night, but after shopping around on the Internet, I found a "reasonable" place at Club Quarters, Central Loop. It was in a good location near the Art Institute and the Sears Tower. The room was small but adequate (did have a flat screen HD tv). The hotel was full of people in great shape and casually dressed. We later learned that Sunday morning would be the Chicago Marathon!! Hotel rooms were at a premium. The weather in Chicago was warm while we were there. It didn't cool down at night like we are used to either. I am glad I decided not to join the racers....

We took the El in from the airport for $2 each. Quicker than a taxi and better than $35+.

Readers Theater at The Old Church

October 7, I attended First Tuesday Readers Theatre's production of Angel Street at The Old Church, 1422 SW 11th Ave. (at Clay). The play was made into the movie Gas Light. The Portland Civic Theatre Guild sponsors seven events this season. Tickets are $6 for a single performance or $35 for the season. There is a coffee at 10:00 followed by the performance at 10:30. The church was nearly full. A friend of mine, Olliemay, sent me two tickets. I noticed that people get there a bit before 10, save their seat, and then proceed into the next room to chat, have coffee and treats. I had a great seat and enjoyed the coffee and especially the excellent readers and great story.

Gary Brickner-Schulz, was one of the actors in the show and was a former student of mine when I taught at Phoenix High School, Phoenix, Oregon (between Medford and Ashland). He used to be in a lot of local theater, but doesn't do so much now. I remember reading a long time ago that he was in a production of Greater Tuna. I wish I could have seen him then.

Thai Shrimp Soup

This soup may not be in focus but it sure was good. The lights above make funny sparkles appear on the surface. I found the recipe in the South Beach Diet Super Charged book. We had a bag of frozen shrimp from Alaska, so I shelled those and used the entire bag. It called for a can of lite coconut milk that I found at Fred Meyer in the Health Food section. I already had the Asian fish sauce, but had to buy another chili-garlic sauce. The problem with buying odd cooking items is that you don't use them enough and have to throw them out and buy another jar the next year! I need to make good recipes more often....

Oregon Korea Foundation Dinner & Auction

Robert, Lee Ann and I went to the OKF annual dinner and auction (silent and oral) held on the Nike campus in the Tiger Wood Center. We ended up with 7 silent auction items. I bid, but lost, in the oral auction bidding on a South African photo safari trip for two.

The food was prepared by the Nike culinary staff.

Fall Social at the Pinnacle Condo

Steve organized and did all the work for the Pinnacle condo Barbecue Social held Oct. 4 in our upper lobby area.
I like this beer container, so will try to remember to get one next time we walk over to Bridgeport Brewery.
There was a great turnout even by 4:30 when Robert, Lee Ann and I had to shove off. We were double booked, so could not stay.
If you get to the party early, you can get first crack at the food!
Food was by Buster's Texas Style BBQ. It smelled great and I sampled the potato salad and deemed it worthy. Wished I could have stayed!

Friday, Robert and I took the streetcar to PSU's Smith Hall for a celebration of The Day of German Unity. We were in the Smith Ball Room where from the patio was a lovely view of the colorful trees in the Park Blocks.

Monday morning I got up early and went down and walked on the beach from 7:15 a.m. to 9:30 and got quite a pile of agates. My haul filled a 8x8 glass pan. I ran into a fellow who felt that his huge area was his alone. We had a bit of a tete-a-tete. I think he has some unresolved issues....

Tuesday, the weather wasn't as good as the day before, nor was the agate finding. I just walked and looked for 30 minutes. I still got some good ones.

Daily Cafe on Sunday

Sunday, after church, we went to Trader Joe's to get food so Robert wouldn't starve while I was at the beach. We drove home to unload and then walked over to the Daily Cafe for brunch. We use to live 1/2 block away from it and went more often then than now. They start you out with a basket of biscuits and scones. The menu has great choices and is always fun to select something good.

Robert started out with the "baked gravenstein apple with whipped creme fraiche and pistachio nut brittle."
My first course was the "custard baked French toast with Italian plum and dried bing cherry compote.

We both ordered the It's Oktoberfest in Munchen! - 2 fried eggs (but we said over easy and they were really 'easy') with pan fired has bratwurst, red gold potatoes and capers. I loved it. The potatoes were even better for dinner (I took the left-overs to the beach). It may not look good to you, but trust me, is was. I love capers and need to remember to use them for breakfast egg dishes.

Auction for Vancouver Free Clinic

Here I am flying us into the Pearson Air Museum in Vancouver, Washington where an auction was held for the Free Clinic of SW Washington. We were guests of my brother, Steve, and his wife, Grete. Steve is a volunteer physician at the Clinic.

The DJ played lots of songs I like, especially "It's Fun To Stay At the YMCA. A lady, Gerrie Reis, at a nearby table was doing the arm movements and I had her stand up and join me. Turned out she is in Steve and Grete's dinner group!! Can you tell we are yelling "Y" when the picture was taken?

Trip to Crema and the Neighborhood

I heard about the Portland coffee/ bakery cafe , Crema, listening to the NPR radio show Splendid Table when Jane and Michael Stern shared their love of the great coffee and pastry in one of their favorite towns. Michael liked their cheddar corn biscuit and Spanish latte. I thought I might order it until I saw other choices. I got there early and managed to get a table for the four women taking part in Septembers Exploring Portland. It is a place to return to many times. Too bad it is on the east side of the river making none too handy.

Sue had the Sour Cream Streusel coffee cake with peaches.

Julie Skinner had the Cherry Apricot Muffin. I sampled it and recommend it.

I had the Mushroom and Manchego (sheep cheese) Biscuit. I liked it.

I gave Linda a sample and she liked it so much she ordered one.My skinny decaf latte. It is a coffee place, after all.

Once we left Crema, we walked around the neighborhood and discovered restaurants and shops. Most of the restaurants hadn't opened up yet. Even stores on Burnside weren't scheduled to open until noon, but we had luck getting into stores on the side streets.
Across the street is an excellent wild and crazy Mexican restaurant Esparzas.

Right next door to Crema is Noble Rot, where once we celebrated one of Lee Ann's birthdays with some of her friends.

Navarre is one of the many eating spots in the area.

A well-knows Mexican restaurant, Taqueria Nueve, went out of business and in its place will be Tapalaya that has "New Orleans Small Plates". It will be worth checking out once it opens in November.

Alma Chocolate at 140 NE 28th St has more than chocolate, such as artwork and bags made of magazines.

Butterscotch was a fun shop to poke around in. Cards, baby gifts and clothes, fun decorations, currently for Halloween.
I loved these chandeliers.

Tabla wasn't open yet. One of many restaurants along the area. Here is a fairly recent review from a great restaurant review blog.

Artemisia (right across from Crema) has an inside and outside area for plants. We spent more time outside....

I liked this plant. Likes shade and water. Could work at the beach.

Guys and Dolls Opens in Portland

Robert and I went to one of my favorite musicals, Guys and Dolls, at Portland Center Stage. We went the first night of the preview shows. The official opening will be Friday, I think.
We saw some of our condo neighbors at the play, so afterward we walked back home with Ann and Bill.

At intermission, dice-like cookies were available to purchase. I thought it was very clever. If you know the play story line you will understand the tie-in.

Race for the Cure 5K Walk

I took part in a 5k walk for the Race for the Cure. Robert went with me so I could identify and find my team from his office, BlackHelterline. He decided to stay and join us and was amazed at the large number of people packing the place. We had to wait for runners to finish and the one mile walkers before starting at 9:00 a.m.

I met my team at the Salmon Street Springs Fountain, eventually. It was not easy to find them.

If you only can walk down solitary paths with no one near you but flora and fauna, you may find this walk a bit crowded.

I loved this all female marimba band stationed in front of Nordstrom.

Heading up toward the Broadway Bridge. Then we turned left onto Lovejoy and on past our condo.

The One Of A Kind Drum Line greeted us as we neared the finish.

This was a great band. Wish I knew the name. I rocked on with them for a few songs at the end of the race.

Sandra Day O'Connor at World Affairs Council

When we were in the lobby of the Schnitz awaiting the World Affairs Council's program of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, Robert saw a long-time client of his. Sometime ago we attended her wedding reception. She was beautiful on her wedding day and still is. Her name is Rolia Monyoga Jones. She was born in Liberia.Black Helterline purchased a row of tickets for the World Affairs Council series.
I tried to snap some pictures of the Justice. After awhile the ushers found me out and I had to stop trying. I am getting used to being curtailed.

Book Group Kick-Off With Ken Kesey

Before our discussion about Ken Kesey's book Sometimes A Great Notion, we had sloppy joes in keeping with the informal meals the Stamper family enjoyed.

They never had this dessert in all of Wakonda, Oregon the fictionalized Oregon coastal lumber town. It takes an ugly photograph, but tastes divine with its ice cream, whole peanuts, fudge and chocolate cookie crust. My next goal is to get the recipe.

BUSTER BAR DESSERT

1 PKG (15 oz) OREO COOKIES

1/2 C. BUTTER, SOFTENED

1/2 GAL. VANILLA ICE CREAM, SOFTENED (The ice cream doesn't come in 1/2 gals but close)

2 C. SPANISH PEANUTS (not always easy to find. Albertsons has them in their own brand)

2 C. POWDERED SUGAR

1 LARGE CAN EVAPORATED MILK

1 C. CHOCOLATE CHIPS

1/2 C. BUTTER

Crush cookies with food processor into coarse crumbs. Mix with the softened 1/2 C. butter and press into a 9x13x2 baking dish/pan. Chill 1 hour or until firm. Spread softened ice cream over crust. Sprinkle with peanuts. Freeze. In the meantime, combine powdered sugar, milk, chocolate chips and 1/2 butter in sauce pan. Melt, mix and simmer for 8 minutes. Cool thoroughly. Spread over nuts. Freeze.

Let it barely thaw before cutting and serving.

Makes 16-20 servings.

Sue Trotter led the discussion. The five of us out of thirteen present who actually finished the 628 page tome had a great deal to say. I would have liked to have gotten into more detail, but it is difficult with many people at odds about the book.

I took my aunt and cousin to see the glass items and watch the glass blower at Alderhouse on Immonen Road south of Lincoln City. We also stopped at Mossy Creek Pottery along the way. Each bought items at both places. Aren't I a good guide?

He was so fast in putting the final product into a 900 degree warming oven that I couldn't get a better picture of the vase than this. It was pretty. If you wanted to buy it, you had to return the next day.

Barbecue at John's Place

Robert and I went to John's beach house for dinner and met Kelly and her mother Michelle. The daddy, Ken, had played golf with Robert and John earlier in the day at Agate Beach. We all enjoyed the gorgeous sunset and lively conversation. Dace was in Bend at a tennis tournament.
I made the cowboy caviar that I had had at Pam Kruse's house at bunco. I served it as a salad instead of with chips. Worked out just fine!

Michelle brought a pasta dish.

John barbecued steaks for everyone. I had the best fillet mignon ever!
While the guys were playing golf Michelle and her daughter were out on the sand in Taft on the bay. She put sun block on her daughter but forgot about herself until about 3 pm. A bit late.... Ouch.

John served vanilla ice cream with fresh raspberries and a raspberry liqueur on it.

Kelly had plain ice cream. She wasn't always this serious. I think Ken just wanted her to try it.

Somehow Robert and John challenged each other to arm wrestling. It ended in a tie.

Justice For All

I drove to Salem Friday to hear our second woman US Supreme Court Justice, Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She was at Willamette's College of Law to take part in many activities. Lee Ann heard her speak at a luncheon and got to ask her a question. It was an informal event and showed the Justice's sense of humor. When I heard her this evening (sitting next to Lee AnnO, it was a formal lecture and only got informal at the Q & A. ** Some years ago I had my picture taken with US Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. I couldn't swing the picture together this time. I needed to get there earlier....

Here is the line in front of me. I just missed getting into the shade. A hat would have been a good thing to have had on.

I got to the line outside of the Smith Auditorium at 3:30 pm. Doors opened at 4 pm. The program started at 5 pm. Below, is the line behind me. It went a long ways.

Willamette College of Law Dean, Symeon Symeonides, and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

She wore her Columbia University Law School robe. Now the hat, like none I've seen. Maybe when you are on the Supreme Court you don't wear your normal tam.

The Justice awaits patiently while being bestowed an honorary Degree of Laws from Willamette Law School.
After the lecture, Lee Ann and I met up at her place and walked to one of her favorite restaurants, Thai Orchid. She claimed that when she goes here she always sees someone she knows. That is quite a statement, since the place is pretty small. But who did she see as we walked to our table - Liz Oswalt sitting with some friends.

September Bunco at Pam's

We played bunco first and then ate, so we could play outside while the weather was nice.

Cowboy Caviar
1 can shoepeg corn drained
1 can blackeyed peas, drained
2 cloves garlic, chopped
1/2 cup diced tomatoes
2/3 cup chopped cilantro
2/3 cup chopped green onion
2 chopped avocados
whisk together 1/4 cup red wine vinegar and 1/3 cup olive oil
add 1 tsp. cumin
mix and serve on chips

Boy, can she mix the Margaritas!

With two people who were not at Bunco we had two "dummies". Liz and Debbie decided not to let them play together. No telling what would have happened! Then there is always the issue of who gets credit when you roll the dice for the dummy and the dummy gets a Bunco! I decreed that the roller gets the credit.
All ten of us sat at the Kruse's nice long dining room table. It had another leaf that we didn't need this time.

The snow peas with fresh dill weed was a great combination.

Brownie with fudge topping and raspberries wasn't on my diet, but I ate it anyway. What can it say?

I loved this cute creamer that was shaped like a school milk carton. Pam thought she bought the set at World Market. Well, Thursday, I went on a search at that store off NW 23rd and had no luck. The workers didn't recall anything like it. Boo hoo.

Aunt and Cousin Arrive for a Visit

My cousin, Lindy, contacted us when she and her mother arrived in Portland after traveling around British Columbia and Alberta via Tucson, Arizona in my aunt's large RV towing a Saturn car. Midge doesn't like to fly, so she and her daughter often travel this way or go on cruises in small ships for a better time. They take their time and go where the wind blows such as taking lots of time in Echo, Oregon where Midge and my dad grew up. My grandpa Ebert had the hardware store there. It is a small town, so they parked the RV in Hermiston.

I gave them a quick tour of my neighborhood and then we went to the condo where we talked and ate dinner as we saw the view of down town get dark and the lights come on.

Dinner at the Boathouse

Mary, Lynn and Carol are sitting on the second level of Jim and Mary's boathouse on the Multnomah Channel. The guys and I are seating on the other side side. We didn't go up there until around 5:30 and the wind picked up so we didn't stay long. The view is great across the channel to Sauvie Island and down river. I always enjoy watching boats go by and managed to take a picture of a few.

Jim barbecued some tasty shish kabobs.

Joe and Dave are out of the wind down on the dock.

Carol wonders what happened to the bottle of wine David brought. It was a Shiraz he aged and bottled himself.

Tea Party and Talk on Container Gardening

Eileen Elliot paid attention to her invitation to the Mad Hatter's Tea Party and wore a hat. She looked grand as she served coffee to American Association of University Portland Branch members and guests.

You can see why my diet went out the window on this day.

The tiny raspberry tart in the top left corner was made by Doris Green. The raspberry curd had the most intense raspberry flavor. Doris said she used frozen berries to get that outcome as she made the curd. That Doris makes desserts like no one else. I eat them like no one else!

Doris Green introduced our guest speaker, Deby Blatter, from Cornell Farms Nursery. Her topic was downsizing gardens, pot and container gardening.

This produce sounded like the magic we all need in our gardening.

She placed all these plants into the top of the container after layering bulbs that will make their way up during the following seasons.

At the lowest level of the pot was placed Tulipa "Princess Irene", then working up toward the upper levels were Narcissus "Tete-a-tete", grape hyacinth, and fall crocus sativus placed between annuals and perennials on the top.

On the top level were: Heuchera (Mahogany), Despina Euphorbia hybrid, heather - calluna valgaris firefly, pansies, and a lovely "toffee twist" grass in the center.

Gelato with Matzoh Ball Chaser

I had been after Robert to have a medical test that everyone is supposed to have by the time they are 50 years old. His doctor never ordered it. I eventually got Robert to call them and request it. The day finally came. Today, after his colonoscopy he was hungry and thirsty. He got cans of cranberry juice and graham crackers at KP. But he wanted more food!

After leaving Kaiser Permanente Robert wanted some gelato from Via Delicia. He picked the cherry chocolate the top one in the middle and straight chocolate, bottom picture.

I had a raspberry chocolate scone made on the premises.

Sitting in the sun with a coffee, he was feeling great.

After eating ice cream Robert went home and I gave him some chicken matzoh ball soup, which is what he should have started with, but hey, he wanted gelato. He got it.
